Video Games in 2021

It feels like video games are trying to figure out what they’re all about right now, and the asset class is maturing as a result. Gone are the heady days of summer 2021 when everything was mooning, and now investors are starting to separate the blue chips from the rest.

Last week’s performance

Fractional secondary markets

The whole asset class was boosted by a copy of SMB 3 on Otis, which holds a disproportionate share of the index on a market cap weighted basis. Overall, though, it was a positive week for games.

It’s noteworthy that older systems (and therefore games) are outperforming their more modern counterparts. While population figures for NES and Gameboy are more or less known, no one really knows how many Playstation games might on a hidden pallet somewhere.

All stats come from assets trading on the secondary markets at Otis, Collectable, and Rally. The “All Video Games” number is higher than you’d expect because it’s done on a market cap basis whereas the individual assets are on a share-weighted basis.

Rally has over $800k worth of video games in the queue, and one is dropping this week.

No new assets trading this week as Rally prepares for real-time trading (RTT), but there are a couple of games to like on Otis.

  • Inferred Value: $550k

Pokemon Yellow: Pikachu Edition, Gameboy, 9.8, A+ Wata

  • Market Cap: $59k
  • Inferred Value: $85k

At Auction

The 8 to 64-bit Video Games Showcase Auction running at Heritage through December 9th showcases some intriguing lots that will help determine where the market is going right now. There are some notable black box NES games as well as a nice version of the SNES Super Mario World. We’re tracking the fifteen most instructive lots in our auction tracker.
