What is the 1985 Michael Jordan “Shattered Backboard” Signed Jersey?
On August 25th, 1985, Michael Jordan was playing in an exhibition game in Trieste, Italy as part of a European tour following his rookie season. What happened during that game was legendary:
He threw down a dunk so hard it DESTROYED the backboard, showering everyone in glass. This is the jersey worn by Jordan during the game, signed, inscribed and dated the very next day. This is a 1 of 1 item.
It IPOs on Rally Road at 12 PM EST on March 22nd for $280,000.
Cultural Relevance
You don’t need me to explain the cultural impact of Michael Jordan, or the relevance of one of his most iconic moments. He did receive renewed attention when The Last Dance, the 10-part Netflix documentary was released last year, but that boost has slowly waned in the year since. He’s obviously still one of the most famous athletes in the world, though not necessarily on the forefront of the cultural consciousness like he was in the summer of 2020.
Inferred Value – $150k – $300k

Growth Outlook and Future Catalysts
The market for Jordan memorabilia has stagnated, with his rookie card’s price falling and I don’t think it’s a good sign that a couple of high profile lots recently did not sell at auction. There’s also not another 10-part Netflix documentary upcoming any time soon. We may have seen the peak for Jordan memorabilia and though I do think a 1 of 1 item will be a good long-term hold, it might be awhile before the value recovers.
Asset Liquidity
This will have a roughly 90 day lockup period then will trade quarterly.

Intangibles
I mean, it’s the jersey he wore when he flew through the air and demolished a backboard. It’s the type of asset fractional ownership was invented for and I’d imagine the shares will go rather quickly depending on the share max even though it’s overvalued. Whether it’s worth a premium to say you own a tiny piece of it is up to you.
