Michael Jordan Precious and Metal Tyson Rookies

Today we have a deep dive into two really unique assets

  1. Michael Jordan 1997 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems BGS 8 – Wednesday 5th April 2021 on Otis
  2. Mike Tyson 1986 Panini Supersport BGS 9 x 2- Wednesday 6th April 2021 on Collectable

Think you can do a better job of writing these up than we can? Please get in touch! We’re looking to add a sports cards analyst to our team.

What is the Michael Jordan 1997 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems BGS 8?

This is red version of a limited /100 set put out by Skybox in 1997. Green cards were numbered 1-10, while red ones made up the rest numbered 11 – 100. Trading data is thin, but green cards tend to sell for around 5x what the green ones go for (which is consistent with other coloured parallel sets.

The foil tends to chip or flake, which makes these cards very hard to find in good shape. In this card’s case, the edges are a bit rough.

It IPOs for the oddly precise $503,500 on Otis noon EST 5/5/2021.

Intangibles

I kind of think this card is really ugly but most people like the shiny.

What is the Mike Tyson 1986 Panini Supersport basket?

This is a pair of BGS 9.0 graded 1986 Mike Tyson rookie cards from the European Panini set. There are only 16 registered with BGS, but it’s worth noting there are another 89 or so with PSA.

This is another one of those funny sets that contain lots of famous athletes from sort of second-tier sports:

  • Michael Spinks
  • Carl Lewis
  • Ivan Lendl
  • Boris Becker
  • Martina Navratilova
  • Steffi Graf
  • Greg Norman

And also Diego Maradona (highlighting him separately because he deserves it).

Quick note on the market cap for this one, as it’s somewhat unclear from the app. This is the info we have:

  • 5,650 shares available
  • $10/sh
  • $12,000 retained equity
  • $56,500 market cap

Not all these things can be true at once. Based on the SEC filing it *looks* like the actual market cap is $56,500 + $12,000 but I’m not 100% sure. I’ve reached out to Collectable to confirm, but they’ve not responded yet.

For now, I’m listing it at $56,500 market cap assuming the consignor is keeping 1,200 of the shares listed as available. I’m not sure if it’s right, but it’s the simplest explanation.

I’ll update you guys on Twitter if I do hear anything.

It IPOs for $56,500 on Collectable 8pm EST 5/6/2021. There will be $12,500 retained equity (18%).

Cultural Relevance

Mike Tyson is sort of in that category with OJ Simpson. Super famous athlete and cultural icon that kind of became a bit of a joke after doing really awful things.

As for the athlete, “The Baddest Man on the Planet” was an out-of-this-world boxer.

He was the undisputed heavyweight champion for thirteen years and won his first 19 professional fights by knockout. Twelve of those were in the first round.

If you have 42 minutes to kill, you can watch all his knockouts.

He was also the youngest ever heavyweight champion at age 20.

It all came crashing down in 1990 when he lost to 42:1 underdog Buster Douglas (I remember watching this fight), getting knocked out in the tenth round. This was subsequent to a significant amount of personal drama and a reported drop off in training regimine. It was one of the most shocking upsets in sporting history.

Two years later, he was convicted of rape and sentenced to six years in prison.

He only served three years, though, and he went on to reclaim the WBA and WBC titles in 1996. [Insiders Only]

Tyson, age 54, is staging a bit of a comeback. He fought an exhibition with Roy Jones Jr in November 2020 (a draw), and he’s slated to face off against Lennox Lewis in September 2021.

Check out the post-fight interview from the Jones fight. It’s something else.

Tyson has a way of staying in the news and remaining relevant, and he’s always a good interview. Further, his rookie cards are
