Welcome to the Sports Cards Insider – FREE VERSION.

Today’s issue looks into two LeBron James rookie cards IPOing this week:

  • 2003 Topps Chrome Black Refractor PSA 9 on Wednesday, September 1st at 12 PM ET at Rally Road
  • 2003 Exquisite Rookie Patch BGS 8.5 on Thursday, September 2nd at 8 PM ET at Collectable

2003 Topps Chrome LeBron James Black

About the Asset

This is a 2003 Topps Chrome Black Refractor card graded PSA 9 — a rarer variant of LeBron’s most widely traded rookie card – the Topps Chrome Refractor. The Black Refractor had a print run of 500 and there are 75 graded PSA 9 (Rally says 71, but PSA says 75) with 20 graded higher at PSA 10. There are also 26 BGS 9.5s and 1 BGS 10, so the PSA 9 is not a particularly rare or highly graded version.

Rally purchased this card for $95,000 on February 19, 2021 and is IPO’ing it at a loss due to the market downturn since then.

About the Drop

This asset will drop on Rally Road at 12 PM ET on September 1st, 2021 for $85,000. There is no retained equity. Rally Road typically schedules the first trading window between 3-5 months after the IPO funds and the assets are supposed to then trade quarterly, but the schedule has been erratic.

Verdict

Keep in mind that there is a BGS 9.5 graded version of this card that trades every day at Collectable — as of EOD 8/31, it was trading at a market cap of $129,870 (the last sale of a BGS 9.5 was at PWCC last week for $96,000). [Full Evaluation for Insiders Only]

2003 Exquisite LeBron James RPA/99 BGS 8.5

About the Asset

This is a 2003-04 Exquisite Collection LeBron James Rookie Patch Auto card graded BGS 8.5. There was a print run of 99, of which 26 are graded BGS 8.5 with 54 graded higher. There is also a horizontal RPA numbered to 100 that has not proved to be as desirable amongst collectors. This exact card was last sold at auction in August 2019 for $192,000.

Verdict

The retained equity level will make it so the consignor has full discretion over any buyout offers in the future.
